It’s been a hectic couple of weeks since the end of the season for FC United.

So this is my first chance to catch up and catch my breath after that momentous game against Bradford. With less than 10 minutes to go we had achieved the impossible… the play-offs… better than anyone could have expected at the start of the season, considering the step up from last season, changes to the playing squad, and the realistic restrictions we place on the playing budget as a club. But BPA scored a late equaliser and Kendal scored an even later winner against a plucky Buxton side, and it was not to be for us.

But the highest praise must be given to Margy and the players for getting us to that moment a week last Saturday. Margy has built yet another side that has gained in confidence as the season has progressed. To become the form team in the league that other top teams were hoping ‘to avoid’ if we had have made the playoffs.

If we can keep this side together for next season, we must be genuine contenders to actually win this division next year. We now have the quality of players (in fact a number have the ability to play a couple of levels higher at least), to more than have a good go at a top 6 place, and just as important a reputation as a great footballing side that has earned us respect from most of the other sides.

A crowd of 3800 or so on the day, and average crowds up on last season can’t be bad either.

Paul has asked me to recount the day in a timeline/diary format so here goes (as far as my fuzzy memory can recall):-

ArmchairArmy Grand Day Out - Team Photo

11:30 Got to the ground early to help unload and set up the kit. I was on the bus that day so that I could indulge in a few pre- and post- match beers.

12:30 Kit unloaded in the South Stand, the TV/Radio crew decamped to CYCM to watch James Quinn’s play ‘At the End of the Day’, do a bit of filming, and have a couple of those large bottles of

Stowford Press Cider. Also got roped into carting all the booze up the stairs with Mrs Producers brother.

14:00 Back to the South Stand to check that the kit was set up and sound checks complete, whilst Paul went off to find the Armchair Army and set up a photo op with Swampy and Brian.

14:20 Finally managed to meet a few of you AA’ers, in the South Stand on

FCUM Radio v Real Comedy

your guided tour, 10 minutes before going on air. Great stuff. Good to see you guys and thanks for listening and all the AA support throughout the season.

14:40 Live on the air and joined by John Henshaw, and James Quinn for the pre-match.

15:00 – 17:00 The match (of which much has already been said..)

17:30 – 19:00 Down to the Swan and Cemetary to enjoy the sun and a few more post match beers

19:00 – 02:00 Censored !!! (but it involved lots of alcohol..)

On the horizon we have the friendly at Daisy Hill… I’m not sure as yet if we’ll be doing any live radio from there, but we do have some new kit we want to test before we traipse off to Sweden for the IF Djurgardens game.

Keg.

After the manic game at Ilkeston I had the idea of somehow saying thank you to all our Armchair Army listeners… what started out as a ‘normal’ show, got more manic as the match went on… and it just become a never ending stream of people texting in to say where in the world we were ‘Loud and Clear’… it was quite a surreal experience, helped of course when we scored the winner .

A mix of the serious (and not so serious) texts received that day, but I hope it gives you an idea of the breadth of the Armchair Army, and the sometimes surreal, sometimes interesting job of sifting through all of these whilst the game is on !

Midday, and The Producer rings me.. “Keg we reckon we can do the radio from Leigh tonight, can you make it, and bring the gear over to my house?”

To be honest I think Swampy and The Producer have finally lost the plot.. Leigh v BPA? I know people will be looking for the results tonight, but enough to make it worth traipsing all the way over to Leigh Sports Village?

Surely the whole thing will be an ambitious wash-out?

Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong could I? A heroic Leigh performance, and BPA drop 3 points. Live updates from Nantwich, and thanks to Ben and George for the half time calls, and most of all, thanks to the hundreds of nutters who logged on to listen and take part in the show last night:- FCUM, BPA, Leigh, Nantwich, and Kendal fans. Thanks to you all for making it a great night. It turned out to be our third most popular show of the year (behind the away games at Ilkeston and Marine).

At one point we were even obliged by the staff at LSV to wear blue Press bibs, whilst doing the show. Cue an almost immediate text from the FCUM contingent on the far side of the ground saying we looked ‘Well gay…’

If ever we needed an incentive to give BPA a spanking on Saturday (not that we do… play off quarter finals and all that…), then how about what the radio team witnessed after the game last night.

The Producer, Swampy and I were amongst the last to leave Leigh Sports Village last night, it was 20 minutes after the game had ended, the visiting hordes of Leigh, FCUM, and Bradford fans were all long gone.
For some reason, the Bradford squad must have decided to for-go Leigh’s post match hospitality, and jump straight back on their (Luxury, VIP.. it said so in big letters on the side) team coach back to Yorkshire.
As the last of the playing/coaching staff were boarding their bus, two of the young lads who had played for Leigh came out to walk over to their car… keep bearing in mind here that there was no one else about.. just the Bradford squad, us, and two young Leigh players.
One of the Bradford coaching staff (a bald, sun-tanned, older bloke), launched into a very loud, intimidating and completely unprovoked verbal assault on the two young Leigh players. Amongst the insults heard were “YOU’RE A F**CKING DISGRACE !! YOU’RE JUST A F**KING PUB TEAM !!” This to two lads quietly leaving the ground on their own, who didn’t react to the unprovoked verbal abuse in any way.

Yeah right Bradford… intimidate a couple of lads on their own, a couple of lads who played in a ‘pub team’ that were better than you for long periods, and a ‘f**king disgrace’ of a team that beat you 2-1 on the night, because if Bradford’s own fans are to be believed (which I do), you played a weakened team tonight, because you assumed that this match was just a ‘gimme’ for you.

Let’s try and define the opposite of Class… oh yeah… it’s that Bradford Park Avenue coach. Gracious in defeat? Not one bit of it. Giving it out to a couple of young lads on their own whilst no-one else is around? Nice one.

At Leigh Sports Village last night I saw a lesson in class both ON and OFF the pitch. Well done Leigh Genesis… oh and Bradford? Take a good look at yourselves…

Giddyometer for Saturday now completely off the scale, it’s in our hands, we CAN DO THIS! And we are all looking forward to meeting the Armchair Army before the game.

See you at Gigg Lane on Saturday !

Keg.

Tuesday morning… and it’s been a long weekend.

It started on Thursday night, which was the race night organised by the Leigh branch, where we did some filming for the players presentation for those who received their one hundred FC United game ‘caps’. Congratulations to Jerome Wright, David Chadwick, Rob Nugent, Simon Carden, Sam Ashton, and Rory Patterson (who unfortunately couldn’t make it due to playing commitments with Droylsden), and also the Leigh Branch themselves for organising the whole thing so well. A great night, and well supported and enjoyed by everyone that was there.

Friday was the date of an arranged friendly between an FC United ‘legends’ side versus Rochdale Town (Castleton Gabriels as was). We decided not to attempt some kind of radio broadcast on the day, as experience has shown as that we only get a few dozen listeners for these impromptu friendlies, and we couldn’t guarantee cover or power at the ground anyway.

If we ever needed reminding of how far we have come in less than four seasons then this was it. Although Rochdale Town is a lovely little club run by some great people I wouldn’t fancy trekking over to the Castleton Sports Centre for a game on a cold and wintry January night. Even in April it felt a bit bleak, an exposed location, a biting wind and driving rain meant that the 250 or so hardy souls watching the game spent the time huddled under ‘bus-stop’stands and umbrellas.

In a game dictated by the weather conditions and the state of the pitch, FC United eventually ran out 4-3 winners courtesy of a couple a goals from Margy, including a screamer from the edge of the box, that I’m sure he won’t let anyone forget. Other faces in the team on the day included Daz Lyons, and Dave Brown.

A very pleasant Saturday night was spent in the company of a number of the people responsible for producing ‘Under the Boardwalk’. The radio crew and the UTB gang have developed a good relationship over the course of the season, with the ‘radioHead’ stuff in UTB, and the fanzine becoming a sponsor of the radio show. It’s not very often we get the chance to get together for a few beers, so the opportunity to do so was eagerly grabbed. Then of course there was the match on Monday, but more of that below..

Why am I wittering on about what I did over the weekend ?

Well, what staggers me is that somewhere, virtually every night of every week, an event of some kind is happening connected with the community of people that make up our football club. Whether it’s fund-raising or social events like those above, or match-days themselves, or committee meetings of some kind, or team training, or work in the community, and probably half a dozen other things I know nothing about. It just goes to show the sheer breadth and scope of what this thing of ours has developed into. That makes me immensely proud.

After the bit of a downer after yesterday result against Nantwich… that kind of thinking puts it all into perspective.

All credit to Nantwich yesterday, they came to Gigg Lane with a game plan, and stuck to it. A well organised defence, and sticking 8 or 9 men behind the ball for nearly all the second half, meant that they managed to deny us all 3 points. I was relatively useless during the second half commentary, because I was just too bloody nervous, especially when we hit the bar twice. Don’t forget in the main it was a very creditable performance by the team, Nantwich are 3rd in the league, yet we were the better team for long periods, and the video replay shows that we had a stonewall penalty appeal (incorrectly) turned down by the ref.

James Quinn hooks up with the FCUM.TV & Radio Team

It was great to be joined by James Quinn before the game and at half time. You may know him as one of the two coppers in the sitcom ‘Early Doors’, the one with the high pitch laugh that cracks me up every time I watch it. We had been to see a couple of James’ short plays at Joshua Brooks the previous week, and Paul invited him to do a bit on the radio. James has been to a number of FC United matches and is a firm fan of the club. Both himself and John Henshaw will be performing one of his plays in CYCM before the Bradford game in a couple of weeks time. It’s a hilarious take on football managers, commentators, and television punditry and it’s well worth seeing. Get yourselves along to Malcolmses’ before 1.30pm on the day and don’t miss it.

So we go into our last two league games still needing six points, and with anxious eyes straying to other teams results. We can still do it.. but it’ll be the hard way, and hasn’t that always been the United way ?

This is the second season we find ourselves entering April and I have to pinch myself at the situation we find ourselves in.

Margy proves all the doubters wrong for a second season in succession, and after spanking NFU (the National Farmers Union ?) 4-0 on Saturday, we find ourselves sitting pretty in the play-offs with just 3 games to go. 4th positon and just a point off Nantwich in 3rd.

The next 3 games are going to be immense (I had to physically remind myself not to use the word ‘ma**ive’ just then) as we play the 3 other teams in the play-off spots (as of now), two of which have already beaten us this season.

FCUM Radio boffins work on possible points permutations for the play offs..

Dropping points just isn’t good enough for those teams anymore, not if they want to continue pushing for those play off spots. So the pressure has most definately transferred over to the teams chasing us. It’ll be interesting to see who blinks first..

Looking at the fixtures for the next week we won’t have to wait long to find out… Bradford, Kendal, and Hednesford all have to play THREE games in the next SIX days.

That’s a big physical and mental challenge when you have to keep winning. Guiseley have got it easy… they just have to play twice

After putting a great run together in recent weeks, Nantwich lost at home at the weekend… a nice little pyschological boost for us for when we play them (fresh as a daisy) at Gigg Lane on Bank Holiday Monday.

I’m not a huge fan of those ‘BELIEVE’ montages that the crowd hold up in Big United games now… but that’s what football is all about isn’t it…believing ?

Right now I believe we are in with more than a good shout of making the play off positions… and after that who knows…?

Looks like I’ll be spending sometime in the evenings searching for Unibond Prem results over the next week !

It’s Sunday evening, the day after the Marine game.

11 days and 3 Unibond league matches since I last blogged on the run in to the end of our season.

3 matches that have seen us win 2 games and draw the other, and score 9 goals and concede 4.

We sit in 6th place in the table just a point from a play off spot.

Now this is all great stuff, but the thing that has pleased me most about the last 3 games (at least on the pitch anyway) is the change you can see in the team spirit, the squad, and the belief that actually, they probably are one of the best fooballing sides in this division now, and have every right to fight for one of those top 5 places.

Self belief is a wonderful thing. Just look at United in the early 90s, once that first premiership title was gained, Old Trafford became a fortress, at that time visiting managers used to go there and expect to able to perform a ‘damage limitation exercise’, and get away with losing by a respectable score as opposed to a drubbing. Many teams had lost the game, in their heads at least, before they even went on the pitch.

I reckon the same can be said for Carlos Roca… hear me out with this one. Carlos looks like he plays on his confidence, if he’s playing well, he’ll continue to improve. He was forced to take the penalty he scored at Ferriby, because the rest of the team knew that he needed that vital goal to boost his confidence at a point where he was missing a number of 1-on-1′s with keepers in a number of games. Look how he has gone on to play since. He’s skinning players for fun, in fact he actually went back and skinned the same player twice at one point yesterday, he’s found a final ball from somewhere, and to top it all he’s developed an eye for goal again.

Like a number of players this season he’s hit form just at the right time for us (at least I hope it’s the right time, and not 2 or 3 games too late !). Yesterday during the second half, the defensive partnership of Tong and Nuge finally seemed to click, Carl Lomax played, for me anyway, his best game for FC United so far. You could see on his face how much scoring meant to him. Nicky Platt was flabbergasted about the reception he got when he came on as a sub at Gigg Lane last Wednesday night. I just hope we can hang on to a starting 11 line up like Ashton, Warrender, Tong, Nuge, Garner, Jerome, Si Carden, Nicky Platt, Roca, Lomax, and Phil Marsh for as long as we can. And thats to not even mention Chaddy, Kyle Wilson, the Baguleys, and Adam Carden.

Our season’s have tended to follow a pattern… we start shakily and then generally improve as we go on, to finish with a flurry and a run of victories towards the end. This is a result of 3 straight promotions, and our squad having to ‘step up’ a level each year and taking 10 to 15 games to find their feet (and self belief – see above). If we ever get promoted to the Blue Square North, expect the same thing to happen again.

I believe we now have a squad of players that ‘get’ FC United, understand the passion, and the uniqueness of this club, it’s members, and it’s support. days like yesterday don’t come along very often at this level. It’s last minute equalisers like Hednesdford, and days like yesterday that make this club special. They are what defines the very essence of football to me as a fan. That’s why I’ll usually be the one that utterly looses it when we score, or gets all giddy when we’re into the last 5 or 10 minutes when we are frantically pushing forward looking for a winner, or last ditch defending to protect a 1 goal lead. That’s just me, I can’t help it. I think we actually started to get complaints when I made a conscious effort to ‘calm down’ during games, so I went back to being a loon.

Speaking of ’calm down, calm down’, that brings me neatly back to yesterday. For some reason (never fully explained), Marine point blank refused entry for the FCUMRadio crew into their ground yesterday. I’m guessing, but I think certain people associated with Marine weren’t entirely happy with the slightly ‘biased’ nature of our commentary during the home game at Gigg. Well, in true FCUM style it was a case of ‘fcum’, and a big thanks go out to everyone involved in sneaking bits of kit in for us, and making us feel welcome in the somewhat cramped confines of the stand ! The one thing I really do miss because do the radio show is the chance to be in with our own support, especially during away games. We are usually stuck in a press box, in a main stand, surrounded by seated, silent, opposition support. So I jumped at the chance to do all the things I normally can’t do. Sing, swear, taunt the opposition, and get involved again. In fact once or twice this season, I have deliberately avoided doing the radio, so that I could do precisely that. Yesterday was my chance to loon around and I loved every minute of it.

There are very few better feelings in life than walking out of a football ground in Merseyside, after coming from behind to win 3-2, and singing “2-1 and you f*cked it up…! 2-1 and you f*cked it up…!”, to the scousers that were left. Surreal memories of Newcastle Town away, when we finally came out into the street though (after we were locked in for 20 minutes), as we were faced with a police line, the main road closed by police horses, and the helicopter hovering overhead. As usual with visits to that part of the world, it was time to keep your head down, make for a sharp exit straight to the car, and off down the East Lancs back to civilisation. Overall it felt like a ‘proper’ away game. Loved it… (had to say it again)

Comedy moment in the last 2 weeks ? Step forward Mr David Chadwick (again). Penalised against Hednesford whilst warming up on the touchline, for celebrating/encroaching after we scored, Chaddy became the first player in our short history to be given a yellow card and then substitued ONTO the pitch to shore up our defence…. he then proceeded to have a small ‘altercation’ with Hednesford’s big number 11, the aftermath of which saw Chaddy peform a running 7 or 8 stride attempt to avoid a comedy pratfall in front of all our support.

5 games to go during our normal season (if Margy reads this he’ll bollock me for not saying 7..), and 4 of them are at home. No excuses for not getting behind the lads. YOU have your part to play. The teams around us may have 1 or 2 games in hand over us but they WILL continue to drop points. We need to keep grabbing 3 at every opportunity we have left.

See you at Gigg lane, or via the text phone.

No, not a long-winded name for an episode of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’, but FCUM Radio’s visit to North Ferriby last night for a hard fought and well deserved 2-0 victory. Transport was provided via a kindly offered lift from George Kitman VC, DFC, MC, MUFC, FCUM and bar.. and good job really as it turned out, considering what happened earlier in the day.

The day had not started well for me… as I had contrived to perform a comedy slip at the top of, and subsequently fell down the stairs at home at 7 o’clock that morning whilst still half asleep. I did however, manage to bounce off every single stair on the way down, and I now have bruises the size of plates, and a crick in my neck which means I can’t turn to look to my right properly, and hence couldn’t drive myself.

The trip over to the east coast was spent listening to how George had been shot at, blown up, and generally done his country service everywhere from Belfast to Botswana. He also seemed very keen to inform everyone that he has in fact been internally infected by ‘Alien’ style parasite chest bursters whilst on holiday in Oz, and that he was off to the tropical disease hospital to have them removed and incinerated the very next day.

“Do you wanna feel me infected lump ?”

“Errmm.. no ta George…”, by the time we were passing Drax Power station on the M62, I was contemplating climbing out of the window whilst we were doing 70, before I too succumbed to some dreaded alien infestation…

The programme broadcast was hampered by the fact that Ferriby could offer us no power, or cover, for all our usual kit and also there was absolutely no 3G coverage in the vicinity… as it turned out even the 2g coverage was at best weak. Also Mr Producer is off working in foreign parts this week, which basically meant he was hob-nobbing at the ballet or opera somewhere around Europe (how the other half lives eh ?), and that myself and Swampy made up the entire Radio crew for the evening.

Therefore we came up with Cunning Back Up Plan Number B. This involves using a headset and mic, plugged into a Bluetooth enabled mini mixer, which we then sync’ed with a suitable mobile phone (my Nokia N95 as it happens). This then relayed the signal (via the weak 2g O2 signal) back to Mike at BoxTV in Manchester who stayed in work late to stream it out via the usual platforms onto the web.

Pre-preparation included me going to buy-up a supply of long-life 9v batteries for all the kit, and making sure a total of FOUR mobile phones (my N95, the text phone, the back up text phone, and another phone of mine to use as a direct link (off air) to BoxTV were fully charged.

Once we’d arrived at Church Rd it was time to test all the kit, batteries, and comms links.. before clambering up a ladder onto the clubhouse roof, which afforded a spectacular view of the Humber Bridge at night, and a great view of the action on the pitch, but had the down side of facing the prevailing wind directly off the North Sea and Humber Estuary. Freezing is NOT the word… perishing cold might be… or maybe even wearing your frozen taters for earings may be closer to the mark. With Swampy providing most of the match commentary, I ensured that the comms links kept working, communicated back to HQ in the Republik, manned the text phones, got the brews, chipped in with the odd word or two, and did everything else.

Church Rd is a charming little ground, very reminiscent of our NWCL days (in fact a number of NWCL grounds have better facilites than Ferriby’s). And the people who run the club couldn’t have been more warm, welcoming, and helpful if they tried. Especially their Chairman.

Full time and a 2-0 win for FC.. courtesy of a Carlos Roca penalty after a Ferriby player was sent off for handling a shot on the line, and a Si Carden tap-in (player of the season for me so far). Great performances from Danny Warrender (as usual), Rob Nugent, Tunji Moses, and MOTM (for me anyway) Carlos Roca.

We left the ground shortly after 10pm for home, a brew, and straight to bed for 1am.

P.S. Don’t forget all contributions gratefully received into the FCUM Radio coffers after the last couple of aways.. covers the cost of O2 pay-as-you-go mobile 3g cards (as used at Matlock), and of course our supply of 9v batterries and my mobile phone bill !

(All I have to do now is get the Executive Producer to explain the FCUM Radio expenses claim procedure to me… easier said than done..)

Right.. The Producer has been mithering me for a few weeks to start contributing a blog to the FCUM Radio website. To enable this to happen he’s gone and done a load of fancy pants (to me at any rate) IT type stuff. Mind you the Atari 512ST is till fancy pants to me… so that may not be saying much.

I’ll apologise in advance for all the spelling and typo errors… ‘cos I spell check stuff in the same way that a grizzly bear spellchecks a salmon before it rips it to bits and scoffs it.

I have no idea how often I’ll blog… it might be every day, it might be every other week, it might be every other vernal equinox, or it might be every time summat stupid pops into my head. So we’ll see how it goes.

Sunday night… after a mixed weekend… and I’m caught between trying to shut the events of yesterday at OT out of my mind (LALALA I’m not listening…), and basking in the glow of 3 luvverley points very obligingly gifted to FC by a Frickley team so short on ideas, that if they had any less ideas, they’d be goldfish.

In fact, talking to Chaddy outside the Swan after the game.. he told to me what the Frickley manager was bellowing at his team during the second half… “That’s the problem with my lot.. they think they can come to somewhere like this and play football, but they bloody well can’t !” Apparently he spent most of the game exhorting his players to hump it long into the channels, and actually threatened to substitute any player that attempted to short pass it to one of his own team-mates… I kid you not.

Anyway Chaddy wasn’t bothered… the Frickley bench kept feeding him Haribo’s throughout the match… so he was happy as a pig in the proverbial..

The other thing that happened yesterday was the new issue of UTB on sale. Just one more place where you can see me and others talk a right load of old crap. It’s good crap though… I liked the ‘Top 10 Wilsons’ and that suedeshoes bloke is always worth a quick shuftie.

Giddyness level hovering just above 1 on me Swedenometer today. Can’t wait, but it’s just that little bit too far away for me to get worked up right now. I’m more giddy about the faint prospect of still making the play-offs if I’m honest.

Anyways… I’ll see you all again in a few days… or weeks… or maybe in an hour. Who knows ?
